Sunday and Monday

The Sunday at the Parc des Bastions was pretty lively in spite of, or maybe because of, the competition of a nearby blitz tournament. There were ever-changing teams, with people coming and going. The play on the giant boards happened in the beginning of the evening, just before it was too dark to play. I owe a big thank you to Firefly, Cranith, wortel and Ilsensine for making the world première of Ambiguous Bughouse happen - wow, were the games short !

In contrast to the ever-extended Bughouse Friday, Monday was shorter than usual, most people leaving in the early afternoon. The duration of the gathering seems to remain about constant though.

Monday around 2 am, during one of the endless bug sessions. My partner gives me the piece I needed (I can't remember which one):

Firefly: 'Hey, do you recall that we have played this game before?'

Me (looking puzzled): 'Ehm, no'

FF: 'Yes, last year we played exactly this game and I also lost horribly'

Me (smiling and amazed): 'Wow, I can't remember all the games I played, do you?'

FF: 'only games where I get smashed like these I remember'

I suppose Maarten doesn't get smashed a lot.. ;-)

Maybe the following anecdote falls rather under the comic repetition category, since about once per gathering we get frowned upon by the regular giant board players because we have to play with wrong square colours because of the bughouse-unfriendly board arrangement.

When we tried to setup the giant bughouse, it looked pretty awkward as not only did we have to play with the wrong square colours, but the only two available boards were almost 10 meters apart. After we rearranged the pieces on those two boards, we noticed that Cranith was still trying to convince two other players to trade their board with one of ours so that we could get two boards closer to each other.

When the players saw at our board they made disgusted looks because we had the square colours wrong. Fine, I am now familiar with that reaction, so I ensured them that we would immediately rearrange the pieces correctly, which we did as fast as possible, after which they agreed to the proposed trade.

OK, that meant that now we had a fourth and a fifth board to rearrange. As you can guess, rearranging a giant board means a bit more work than rearranging a standard one, but we were eager to play and did it as fast as we could. We were finally going to start playing when an appalled Cranith made us notice that we had set both White on the same side...
